Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are Coming to the iPad

In a move that is sure to re-ignite a love for the iPad for creators, Apple has unveiled Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for the iPad. Apple is not only bringing these powerful and popular programs to mobile, but also redesigning them for optimal use.

What are Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro?

Video and music creators can take advantage of these programs on the go and with new touch interfaces. Final Cut Pro is Apple’s flagship video editing tool. It lets users edit advanced videos. With this mobile version, you could record and edit on the same device, or quickly transfer your footage from another camera to the iPad to start editing immediately. Logic Pro is a music creation tool. In addition to recording, editing, and effects, Logic Pro also includes beat-making functionality and built-in instruments.

Final Cut Pro comes with a suite of features unique to the iPad interface. The new jog wheel overlay lets users navigate the timeline, move clips, and make fast edits with minimal taps. Multi-touch gestures increase flexibility and mitigate a lot of the limitations of a touch-only editor. Live Drawing with an Apple Pencil is supported in Final Cut Pro. Users can take advantage of the Apple Pencil hover feature to skim through footage without actually touching the screen. Since users will be working on an iPad, editors can also take advantage of keyboard shortcuts and commands by attaching a compatible keyboard. The iPad is a great medium for video editing because of its relatively large screen for a mobile device and its Liquid Retina XDR display for working with HDR video. This will make color grading a breeze.

If users want to record video on their iPad, they can do so through the Final Cut Pro app. Pro camera mode lets users shoot video, monitor audio, and manually control common camera settings like white balance and focus. This means that the iPad can be a one-stop shop for creators, offering recording, editing, and sharing capabilities.

Apple also highlights multicam video editing, which synchronizes clips together when multiple cameras are involved. Editors can simply tap on the camera angle they’d like to switch to while progressing through the timeline. Leveraging the power of Apple silicon and machine learning, Final Cut Pro for iPad has some powerful and attractive new features. Editors can quickly and easily remove and replace the background from a subject even without a greenscreen. The software also includes auto-crop features that can reframe content for different aspect ratios, like horizontal-to-vertical.

iPad users can also enjoy features they’re used to in the desktop version of Final Cut Pro, such as professional graphics and effects.

Logic Pro for iPad

Logic Pro for iPad gives musicians more flexibility! With multi-touch gestures, users can play instruments in-software and interact with controls in a natural way – as if the synth was right in front of them. Complex projects can be navigated with pinch-to-zoom and swipe-to-scroll. Plug-in Tiles put the most useful controls front and center.  With the iPad Pro’s 5 built-in microphones, musicians can even capture live audio no matter where they are. Editing can get even more precise with the use of Apple Pencil or a compatible keyboard.

The new sound browser allows creators to browse and filter through preset sounds and beats. They can also browse instrument patches and plug-in presets. Logic Pro comes with over 100 instruments and effects plug-ins, giving users a great experience out of the box. It even includes Sample Alchemy, a tool that can take and manipulate samples.

With a variety of new tools, Logic Pro users can create awesome beats. Some tools will even let musicians customize their drum sound, add samples, or automate plug-ins.

How Much Do Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad Cost?

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on a subscription basis. They will be available in the App Store for $4.99 each per month or $49 each per year with a one-month free trial if purchased for a full 12 months. Contrasting that to their full versions, Final Cut Pro for MacOS is a one-time $299.99 purchase, and Logic Pro is a one-time $199.99 purchase. This means that iPad users would have to subscribe to both for 5 years until the costs equal out – this makes the subscription price incredibly attractive. Especially so for people who are more comfortable spreading out the cost rather than dropping hundreds of dollars in one purchase.

Final Cut Pro is compatible with M1 chip iPads or later. Logic Pro is compatible with A12 Bionic chip iPads or later. Both require iPadOS 16.4 or higher. They will be available on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
