Minimalism is a design trend that comes and goes but is never truly out of style. Less is more is a good approach when it comes to drawing user attention to specific features on your website. If you find your site growing cluttered and without a particular purpose for each page, it might be time to look at minimalist web design again.

According to the ever-moving counting ticker at Internet Live Stats, there are approximately 1.9 billion websites worldwide. Not all are live, but you’re competing against several other factors to grab consumer attention and keep them on your page. If you don’t focus on the purpose of your site and the goal for each page, you can quickly lose people to something else that yanks them away.

One of the best ways to learn minimalist web design is by studying the work of other designers. It doesn’t have to mean boring. We’ve sorted through hundreds of examples and come up with 15 we think show some of the best elements of minimalism websites.

Note the single image in the center of the screen with plenty of negative space surrounding it. The user’s eye is immediately drawn to the hand clasping blackberries.

Le Pichet is a Seattle cafe. Note how it limits its navigation to two choices. Going with the fewest options possible guides users through the buyer’s journey and takes them exactly where you want them to go. If you wish to refocus the attention on the goal of a page, reducing the number of options is an excellent tactic.

7. Wingmen

We love this Hillstone design and how simple but beautiful it is. Note how the angles of the logo repeat in the hero image. The colors are white, black and red, with red kept to a minimum. Navigation is a CTA and a hamburger menu.

R.E.M. Beauty does something a bit different than most cosmetic product websites. It goes with a simple approach of an image, one CTA button and a few other elements, such as a logo, search, shopping cart and menu. There is plenty of blank space that’s left unfilled.

The lack of elements on the right side of the screen draws the user’s eye to the CTA button. The photo has a woman facing toward the CTA as well. It’s clear what action the buyer should take to move forward in their journey.

Is Minimalist Web Design Right for You?

Minimalism works well for most websites, but only you can determine if your audience responds to it. Try removing some of the clutter from your page and run split tests. Make small changes on your way toward the minimalist trend. With time and attention, your site should retain only the most needed features for your visitors.
