PREPRESS SETTINGS

As soon as you start working with Permanent Press 2 you’ll realize its designed as close to a real working printing press as we could make it! To get you started, you’ll define what ink color mode and inks you’ll be printing with, the paper you’d like to print your work on and the amount of image detail you want to retain!

INK COLOR MODES

Whether you’re working with a photograph, illustration, type treatment or a design, you’ll be amazed at what Permanent Press 2 can do! Select from Spot Mode for a custom spot color palette or CMYK Mode (Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black) to create a halftone offset printed effect.

SPOT MODE

All ink colors are automatically calculated by the plug-in and are easy to edit giving you full control over how much or how little detail you want the plug-in to capture from the original image.

What would great printing press effects be without great papers to show ’em off? Permanent Press 2 features over 35 different papers for you to ‘print’ your images on and you can colorize or tint ’em to your heart’s desire!

Ink and paper are a great start but let’s dive right in to Permanent Press 2 and check out its amazing Ink Effects!

INK EFFECTS

Just like a real offset printing press, we knew you’d want complete control over your ink! From its opacity and viscosity to the texture of your ink, Permanent Press 2 lets you choose the character of your ink in amazing detail!

INK OPACITY

Adjust your inks transparency to create a realistic printed look and let your paper shine through! Choose transparent inks to reveal more of the paper below or pick a more opaque ink to sit brightly on top of the paper surface.

INK TEXTURE

Choose from over 35 ink textures to apply to any ink plate that you’re working with. It’s easy to select an ink texture from our ink texture picker or work with solid inks only.

Ink textures can be applied globally to all ink plates simultaneously or applied to each individual ink plate making it easy to combine ink texture effects or to alternate ink plates without ink textures.

We’ve made it easy to change the scale of the ink texture as well as the intensity of the ink texture effect depending on your preference.

INK VISCOSITY

Ink Viscosity refers to how wet the ink is. Wetter ink will spread and drier ink will result in less coverage. You can see below how the viscosity has been applied globally to all Ink Plates resulting in a loss of detail and an increase in overprinted Ink. On the right, we’ve only modified the viscosity of a single Ink Plate (Blue) while leaving the remaining Ink Plates intact.

PLATE EFFECTS

Just like a real offset printing press you can fully adjust the position of the printing plates, their offset, rotation and plate trapping. Want more pop? Add an extra dimension to your image with emboss and deboss effects to create authentic Letterpress looks!

INK PLATE DEPTH

Quickly and easily create authentic emboss or deboss effects by simply adjusting the ink plate depth. You can also adjust lighting direction or offset the effect for a truly realistic stamped look!

PLATE OFFSET/ROTATION

Permanent Press 2 features unparalleled offset ink plate controls which allow you to offset each plate horizontally or vertically in any direction! What’s more, you can also control the rotation of any ink plate up to 20 degrees in either direction for a vintage offset feel revealing the paper surface beneath.

INK PLATE TRAPPING

Use our Ink Plate Trapping control to either starve or gain an individual ink plate and cause the ink to spread or choke depending on how much trapping you wish to allow per plate.

Not only can you control your plates with exacting precision, but you have the flexibility to apply any of our Plate Effects to a single plate or all of ’em!

HALFTONE EFFECTS

Whether you’re working with a Spot or CMYK color palette, our Halftone controls can’t be beat! Not only can you adjust the amount of halftone your image has, but you can adjust each ink plate individually for slick custom looks!

HALFTONE AMOUNT

Rather than force halftone effects totally on or totally off, we’ve developed a unique way to introduce halftone effects with Halftone Amount which can be applied to a single ink plate or to all ink plates simultaneously.

HALFTONE TYPE

Permanent Press 2 uses a classic halftone dot screen but we’ve included a host of fantastic halftone styles for even more artistic screened effects!

Before halftone screen effects existed, artists created tonal looks by hand using stippling techniques with ink pens or paint brushes and our Speckled halftones do this perfectly. Looking for something more Mad Men? Show off a classic 1960s rub-down screen texture by choosing from our Screened or Screen Lined tones to replace any ink plate with.

HALFTONE SCALE

Once you have a Halftone you’re happy with, it’s easy to adjust the scale of the halftone! Use a small halftone scale to create a vintage printed magazine look or scale up your halftone to create a bold pop art look!

HALFTONE DOT SHAPE

You can apply one of five classic halftone dot patterns to your image, each applying its own unique look and feel to your image. What’s more, you can even adjust the angle of each halftone ink plate to render true CMYK effects!

If you thought we saved the best effect for last, you’d be correct!

PRESS EFFECTS

There are multiple effects that combine to create the realistic look of genuine offset press printing and we consider the Effects settings to be the hallmark of the Permanent Press aesthetic. Each Effect control on its own is amazing but combined, they’re out of this world!

EDGE EFFECTS

Start with our Edge Roughness control to make your edges smooth and silky or rough and tumble! Wanna make ’em even thicker? No sweat, we’ve got a control for that as well!

EDGE STARVE WIDTH & OPACITY

Never heard of Edge Starve you say? Imagine a freshly inked printing press plate coming down on a sheet of paper with a mighty force to press an image. Each time the plate is lifted off the sheet, the ink is drawn back to the plate and simultaneously pools in the center and the edges of the printed image. The area between these two is left under-inked and appears visually lighter sometimes referred to as the Edge Starve area.

Permanent Press 2 lets you control not only the width of the Edge Starve but also the opacity of this area! For the first time ever you can create this authentic look with a a few sliders without spending hours recreating it!

PRESS PRESSURE EFFECTS

The Pressure Effects control the direction the plate is coming down onto the surface of the paper as well as the force. Our simple and powerful GUI controls allow you to adjust the direction the pressure is strongest. As you may expect, the ink edges will respond to changes in the direction of pressure and adjust accordingly producing a very convincing effect.
