Signs and Mirrors: Transforming Business Identity with Cutting-Edge Signage

Signs and Mirrors: Transforming Business Identity with Cutting-Edge Signage

Brands with physical spaces are always looking for beautiful ways to showcase their store and what better way than with a beautiful outdoor sign.

When choosing a sidewalk sign or pavement sign, it needs to be visible, eye-catching, and well-designed. If your client has a physical space, make sure to work with them to design an elegant sign for their business.

Today, we’re going to dive into the story of how Jamie and Alan started one of the hottest new sign shops, Signs and Mirrors.

When Jamie and Alan opened their self-portrait studio in New York City, FotoLab Studio, they had a vision of creating a unique, inviting space for our customers. They wanted everything about their studio to reflect that vision, including the perfect sidewalk sign that would draw people in. They looked high and low for a sign that was both beautiful and minimal, something that could represent their brand and entice passersby to step inside.

Searching Through Endless Sign Options

Despite the numerous sign options available—wooden frames, metal signs, chalkboard signs, plastic signs—nothing seemed to capture the aesthetic they were aiming for. They wanted a sign that wasn’t just functional but also visually stunning.

Given they ran a photo studio, that’s when the idea of a mirrored A-frame sign came to them. They thought, why not create something that people could actually interact with and want to take pictures of? A sign that was not only eye-catching but also served as a memorable piece of their brand.

The Challenges of Creating a Beautiful Sign

Creating a mirrored A-frame sign from scratch was no small feat. It turns out, mirrored A-frames are quite difficult to make. Most metal signs are pre-built for plastic board inserts or consist of plastic and vinyl. Jamie and Alan wanted a beautiful dual mirror attached to an A-frame sandwich board stainless steel frame. The difficulty was that they would need to custom design and attach the mirror so that it was not only stable and beautiful, but could also withstand the outdoor elements.

After countless hours of research, trial and error, and a few mishaps along the way, they finally crafted a sign that we were proud of. This sign was more than just a way to advertise their studio; it became an interactive element that customers loved to photograph and share on instagram and other social media. Surprisingly, they began to see as many pictures of their sign as they did of their actual studio!

Launching Signs and Mirrors

Customers would frequently ask Jamie and Alan where they bought their outdoor sign which sparked an idea: if they could create something so unique for their business, why not help other businesses stand out too?

After a few months of tinkering, Signs and Mirrors was born. As a small family business, Jamie and Alan take immense pride in handcrafting each sign. We understand the importance of making a lasting impression, and our mirrored signs do just that.

The Reality of Mirrored Signs

Mirrored signs can be an incredible unique attraction for your business but they’re not for everyone. Here are some things to consider:

  • Maintenance: Mirrored signs require regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Fingerprints and smudges can accumulate, so be prepared for some upkeep.
  • Fragility: Mirrors can be more fragile than other materials, so careful handling and installation are crucial to avoid damage. At Signs and Mirrors, they use HD mirrors with a special coating to increase their strength and durability.
  • Cost: Mirrored signs can be more expensive to produce than traditional signs due to the materials and manufacturing processes involved. Make sure to budget accordingly!

Making the Decision

If you’re considering a mirrored sign for your business, make sure to think through the pros and cons. Think about your location, the level of maintenance, and the impression you want to make on your customers. For a business like a new clothing brand or yoga studio or salon, a mirrored sign can perfectly align with themes of self-reflection and boosting confidence.
