Firefly, Adobe’s AI art generator, has come to Photoshop with Generative Fill. This allows users to extend images, add or remove objects, and more. These generative AI tools now being bundled with Photoshop allows digital artists to effortlessly combine their existing workflow with AI tools.
What is Firefly?
Adobe has dabbled in AI for over a decade with popular tools like Content Aware Fill. Firefly is Adobe’s collection of generative AI models, launched six weeks prior to this announcement. It was initially launched for generating image and text effects. From there, Firefly supported vector recoloring and generative fill. Firefly’s first model is training on Adobe Stock images and openly licensed content with no copyright restrictions.

This means that companies and individuals will be able to use Firefly without worrying about copyright or legal grey areas. This has been one of the main concerns with tools like Midjourney.
this cost me HOURS to do back in November – it was now done in a matter of seconds right within @Photoshop, that's pretty bonkers… https://t.co/yNI3t0I7GZ pic.twitter.com/VXdIWjv8IS

Making Creativity Easy
With Firefly integrated so deeply into Photoshop, additional tools are at the fingertips of digital artists. Generative Fill can generate endless ideas, but they will all match the perspective, lighting, and style of the original image. Users can take advantage of simple text prompts using natural language, making the tools accessible to anyone. And of course, in true Photoshop fashion, users can edit non-destructively and reverse effects whenever they like.
Generative Fill will allow amateur and professional digital artists alike to experiment with ideas they never would have had otherwise. Even if they don’t use AI-generated ideas, it may spark inspiration for a new concept.
How to Get Generative Fill
Generative Fill is available in the desktop beta release of Photoshop, so be sure to download the beta version in the Creative Cloud app if you want to use it. It will be available on the main public branch of Photoshop in the second half of 2023.
Adobe’s AI Ethics
With so much controversy around AI-generated art and how the AI engines are trained, Adobe has opted to be open about how their tool is trained and tries to have a transparent approach. Generative Fill supports Content Credentials, a label that can signify whether a piece of content was human-created, AI-generated, or AI-edited. This data stays associated with a piece of digital content wherever it is used, published, or stored. It maintains proper attribution and can help consumers make well-informed decisions about the digital content that they interact with. The Content Credentials technology was developed by Adobe.
