Canon EOS R5 and R6 Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras Announced

Today Canon introduced their next generation of full-frame mirrorless cameras – the EOS R5 and EOS R6.

  • EOS R5 scheduled to be available at the end of July for an estimated retail price of $3899.00 for the body only

  • EOS R6 scheduled to be available at the end of August for an estimated retail price of $2499.00 for the body only

  • Canon also announced four new RF lenses and a pro printer

The EOS R5 is designed for professionals and features a new 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and uncropped 8K video recording up to 29.97 fps. The EOS R6 is made for ‘advanced amateurs’ and features a 20.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and 4K video recording up to 59.94 fps.

What does this mean for photographers/videographers?

With these technical advancements at this price point, the Canon EOS R5/R6 are both a big deal. Both cameras allow for a lot more control and flexibility in photo/video work.

In DP Review’s Initial Impressions post they said: “It’s worth mentioning that the fact that this camera can capture 8K/30p footage also means that it is capable of perfectly oversampled 4K/30p footage. So even if you don’t need 8K, you may be getting some of the most detailed 4K you can find in a consumer camera.”

Let’s dive into some more of the technical details of the R5 and R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras.
