Adobe Camera to Cloud Coming to Public Beta + Premiere Pro Updates!

In our coverage of Adobe MAX in October, we covered Adobe’s announcement of Camera to Cloud for certain RED cameras, using Frame.io. And now a release date has been officially annoounced. Starting on Thursday December 8th, the Public Beta for Camera to Cloud will be available! This integration works with RED V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL cameras and enables these cameras to upload 8K REDCODE RAW files directly from the camera to the cloud on Frame.io – all you need is an internet connection! If you use these cameras and Frame.io, you can download the Beta firmware starting Thursday!

Update: Frame.io Camera to Cloud is now available. In addition, Adobe announced that Adobe video editing tools were used in over two-thirds of the films features at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. They have been the most popular company for Sundance filmmakers for the last 5 years in a row.

Speed and Security

The Camera to Cloud feature has been tested extensively, and Frame.io even claims they used the process to edit the announcement video below. They did have a fast internet connection for this, but they still uploaded 4TB of 8K RAW footage directly from their cameras to Frame.io. All without having to import a memory card or mag to a computer. This enables offsite editors to easily start work on a project without slow cloud storage downloads or mailing hard drives. Or, you can get started on an edit while it’s still being filmed, and takes can be uploaded to the cloud right after they’ve been filmed!

You will need internet upload speeds of 800 Mbps minimum in order to get the most out of it. However, you can choose to upload ProRes proxy files and only requires upload speeds of 80 Mbps.

Creative Cloud Updates

This announcement comes alongside announced updates to Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Character Animator. Premiere Pro’s update will roll out on December 8th, while the After Effects update will roll out starting on December 12th.

Premiere Pro 23.1 Updates

  • Upgrade captions to graphics: The captions system of Premiere Pro has been incredibly useful and powerful ever since it was introduced. But what was lacking in it was the ability to edit the captions just like normal text. With this update, editors will now be able to convert captions to graphics in order to create stylized, animated graphics.

  • Collaborative editing with Premiere Pro: You can now add collaborators directly from the header bar, and see who is currently working on a Team Project.
  • Sequence Locking:  Another collaborative feature, sequence locking makes it so that Premiere Pro will show you when someone is working on a sequence. It will also automatically lock to avoid conflicts.

  • Easily share changes with collaborators: You can now use the Publish button to share edits with collaborators. The new Changes column in the program will show all collaborators when a sequence has been edited.
  • Select toggle switches on multiple tracks: Toggle the visibility and lock status of multiple tracks at once by selecting them while holding Ctrl or Command.
  • Improved support for ARRIRAW with GPU deBayering: Expanded Source Settings and GPU deBayering for real-time highest image quality playback, with ARRIRAW footage.
  • RED V-Raptor SL camera support: Supports import of RED V-Raptor XL footage.
  • Expanded XAVC HDR support: You can now export XAVC in Rec. 2100 PQ HDR with support for intra and long GOP encoding.

After Effects 23.1 Updates

  • Cinema 4D 2023 Integration: There is now tighter integration with Cinema 4D 2023. The update ensures that you can seamlessly work with native Cinema 4D files, manipulate 3D elements, and render directly from inside of After Effects.

Character Animator 23.1 Updates

  • Modernized GPU Support: Now, recent MacOS systems support Metal, and Windows systems will support DirectX 12.
  • Motion Library Strength parameter: There is now a strength parameter to control the influence of the behavior on the tagged handles.
