Sony Announces Cloud Platform For Creatives

Sony has announced their own cloud platform in response to Adobe’s Frame.io product. The Sony Creators’ Cloud platform was previously available to only professionals and enterprise users. But it is now available to anyone with more planned features releasing soon.

This suite of cloud-based tools will improve the workflow of productions. Crews can work with various cameras and upload the content to the cloud. There are also AI tools included that will increase production speed. Currently, the suite’s main features are the Ci Media Cloud media management and Discover, a platform to find and connect with peers. One example of an AI app in the roster is Master Cut, which applies cloud-based AI to pre-edit video editing – essentially, it can stabilize and remove noise from uploaded clips while also normalizing audio.

Camera to Cloud

In the future, Sony intends to add a camera-to-cloud feature similar to the one found in Frame.io. The feature will be available in the new Creators’ App, the successor to the current Imaging Edge Mobile Plus app. With it, you’ll be able to upload, view, and manage photo and video content from specific Sony cameras, and store those files in the cloud from your smartphone. Compatible cameras will allow direct uploads from the device. Free users will have access to 5GB of cloud storage, with some users having access to 25GB depending on the camera they own. When Creators’ App launches, the current enterprise cloud application C3 Portal App will be renamed Creators’ App For Enterprise. While the app will allow for mobile workflows, all of the tools are also available via a web browser.

Collaboration Tools

Ultimately, as features are added to Sony Creators’ Cloud, individuals and teams will gain access to more collaboration tools, increased ability to share and manage their files, and ideally a “one-stop shop” for content. With tools such as their Catalyst Prepare Plugin for Premiere Pro, you can use the Sony workflow throughout your entire process. The Ci application has new subscription plans to better support individual creators. But it also has features to let creative teams collaborate on media files across devices with a straightforward interface. With the new Discover platform, you can see images and videos from other creatives. You’ll also be able to see information about the location, camera and lens model, and camera settings.

We can expect the unreleased features to become available sometime in Spring 2023. More information can be found on the Sony Creators’ Cloud webpage.
